Q. Hello! Who are you and what product are you working on currently?
Hi! My name is Ben Aguilera, and I'm working on two products: my product video agency and a library for saas product videos.
Q. What is your backstory and how did you come up with your idea? Do you have any partners?
I wanted to start animating back in 2014 when I was doing wedding videos and attending university. I went to NYC and bought a Mac in 2015, but my country fell into chaos in the following years. I had to work any odd job I could find until I landed at an American company in 2018. That's where I discovered the concept of internet money and realized I could work from anywhere. When that company closed in 2019, I stayed in touch with one member who became a sort of partner. We did great things and made a lot of money together, working with Hollywood giants on social media, branding, and video production. We parted ways in 2022, and I decided to go all-in on my agency but didn’t really know how. I tried social media, web design, and other ventures for months until I decided to focus on animation and product videos about 10 months ago. Since then, we've seen exponential growth. I do have a partner, my longtime girlfriend, Albany.
Q. Take us through the process of building the first version of your product MVP.
It's not exactly applicable since this service was something I already knew how to do, but it did take some thinking and trial-and-error with my first few free clients.
Q. How did you get your first customers for your product (Free or paid users)?
My first three videos were free. We created visuals for two apps and one accounting service, which helped us build a portfolio to pursue bigger clients. I reached out to well-known individuals and even DMed someone on Twitter, offering a free video. This connection led me to another agency owner who was interested in our services.
Q. Since you launched your product, What has worked to attract customers?
Twitter is definitely the most powerful tool, along with LinkedIn. However, LinkedIn's audience tends to consist of larger companies that require sign-off from multiple people. For a $5k product, this isn't practical. I've found it more enjoyable to work with smaller companies.
Q. How is your product performing currently, and what are your plans for the future? Can you share your current metrics and revenue figures?
We're doing well. We have three projects right now, totaling five videos, and plan to do more outreach to increase demand and expand the team. Currently, we are a team of three and aim to grow to five so everyone can have a distinct role and we can be more efficient. If all invoices are paid on time, we'll make about $7k this month and hope to break $10k next month.
Q. Since the inception of your business, have you gained any insights that have provided you with a competitive advantage and proven beneficial to your operations?
I have. Businesses often struggle with implementing video. Helping them understand where, when, and how to use these assets will give you an edge.
Q. What tools have helped you grow your product?
Twitter is the most helpful. On the technical side, we use After Effects, Figma and Illustrator. I want to dive into Rive and Jitter for interactive video, and 3D with Blender or C4D.
Q. Which books, podcasts, or other resources have had the greatest impact on you?
Deep Work set me up for success by helping me focus. Meditations taught me to calm my mind, which is important for an entrepreneur facing difficult or good times each month. "The Hard Thing About Hard Things" provided perspective, making me realize that 1) connections and locations are extremely important, and 2) billionaires and highly successful founders aren’t different; the differences in attitude and personality are minor but crucial, and they can be chosen.
Q. What advice would you offer to entrepreneurs who are looking to start or have just begun their journey?
Getting clients should be your first priority, even if you have to work for free. Also, work on a kick-ass product and always make extra effort in every decision you make, no matter how little. Lastly, there's no shame in having another job that pays the bills and also finances your business, while you build on the side. I wish I had that option.
